Thiruvananthapuram: The fisherfolk of Valiyathura reached the relief camps four years back when the sea washed their houses away. Their lives have not moved an inch forward from this state. They are still residing in the godowns near the sea bridge, Valiyathura UP School, and BUDS school here.
335 families were reportedly abandoned when the sea engulfed hundreds of houses from Valiyathura to Kochuthope. As many as 17 families live currently in the two-storeyed building of BUDS school. The buildings here are not electrified and light has been set up by extending cable from the nearby Anganwadi. The water tank has no top to cover and there are only two lavatories here.
The school and college students here are in distress without adequate facilities to study. Inmates change their clothes by hanging sarees as curtains in a corner of the classroom. The elders have to sleep in verandas due to limitations in space. Meanwhile, six feet high sheds were set up for 20 families in the godown.
Though the officials completed the data collection years ago, the issues of the victims families were not addressed yet.
